Demon Deacons Open 2016 Season
Friday marks the season opener for the Demon Deacons in 2016, as Wake Forest travels to Radford, Virginia to face the Highlanders. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
Friday's contest will be available on the Big South Network and online at bigsouthsports.com. Rick Watson will have the call of the action.
New Coach in Charge
Bill Ferguson enters his first season at the helm of the Demon Deacon volleyball program after being hired on June 4.
Ferguson served as the head coach of the University of Southern California men's volleyball team from 2005-2015, and spent 12 total seasons with the Trojans. During his time as head coach, Ferguson led USC to three NCAA volleyball Final Fours and a pair of runner-up finishes in 2009 and 2012. He was also named the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Coach of the year in 2009 and 2012 as well.
Lindsay Allman, who joined the Demon Deacons in February and served as the interim head coach from April through June remains on staff as an assistant coach. Joining her is Arturo Rivera who spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Harvard and helped the Crimson to a combined 48-25 record during his time.
Scouting the Highlanders
Radford finished the 2015 year with a 14-15 (6-8) record and a runner-up finish in the league's regular season standings.
This season, Radford was slated to finish third in the preseason poll with 58 points while High Point (76) and Liberty (68) claimed the top two spots.
Maddie Palmer was named preseason All-Big South for the second consecutive year. As a sophomore, Palmer averaged 3.82 kills per set and recorded 13 double-doubles despite missing over a month of action with an injury.
As a team, the Highlanders return 10 letterwinners from a season ago, including five starters. Kelby Jackson, a three-year starter at libero enters her senior season fifth all-time in career digs.
Marci Jenkins is in her ninth season leading the Radford volleyball program and has led the Highlanders to back-to-back regular season titles in 2013 and 2014.

The two teams last met on September 8, 2007, with the Demon Deacons earning the 3-0 sweep.
Wake Forest is 2-2 all-time in matches played at Radford.
Looking Ahead
Wake Forest returns home to host its first of two tournaments September 2-3 as the Demon Deacons welcome Davidson, College of Charleston and Loyola to Winston-Salem for the Demon Deacon Classic. The tournament will be held in the LJVM Coliseum.
