Deacs Crowned Co-Champs in Gold Singles

ELON, N.C. – Wake Forest women's tennis continued its stellar start to the 2016 fall season on Saturday with four singles wins and a doubles victory in the Gold draws of the Elon Invitational.

The day started off with an 8-4 victory for Courtney Meredith and Alexis Franco over Gaby Rosales and Kiana Marshall of Richmond to advance to Sunday's final. There, the Deacon duo will battle Alya Mourad and Alisa Soloveva of Winthrop for the draw title.

In singles action, Meredith and Franco went 4-0 on the day as Meredith picked up victories over Dessi Zlateva of Richmond (6-1, 4-6, 5-3 (ret.)) and Natalia Janowicz of Elon (6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3. Franco continued the unbeaten start to her college career with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Emily Groenveld of Liberty and completed the day with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Lea Owens of Richmond.

With the two Deacs winning their way to the finals of the Gold Singles draw, Sunday's match between the two will not be played and the two have been crowned co-champs of the draw.

Sunday's doubles final in the Gold draw for Meredith and Franco is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the final day of the tournament.
