DURHAM, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team opened the 2016-17 season with a strong opening day at the Rod Myers Invitational at the Duke University Golf Course. The Demon Deacons, who are the reigning champions at the event, are at 18-under and lead by 12 strokes as second round play was almost completed Saturday before darkness.
Wake Forest shot 10-under during the first round, one shot off the tournament record. They are at 8-under for the second round with one hole remaining. Liberty is in second place at 6-under, while Florida State (4-under) and North Carolina (2-under) are the only other squads under par for the tournament.
Will Zalatoris, who was one of two players to not complete his second round, leads the Deacs at 7-under for the tournament, currently in second place. The defending individual champion, Zalatoris shot a 7-under 65 in the first round to tie the tournament single-round record. He is even-par in the second round with a putt on the 18th green left to compete his round.
Paul McBride is in third place at 6-under for the tournament. He posted a first round 67 before a second round 71.
Eric Bae, making his collegiate debut, shot a 3-over 75 in the morning before posting a 5-under 67 in the afternoon. He is T-7th at 2-under for the tournament. He is tied with teammate Cameron Young, who shot an even par 72 during the first round and a 2-under 70 during the second round. Kyle Sterbinsky rounded out the Deacon lineup, shooting rounds of 74 and 76 to sit at 6-over.
"It is a long day with 36 holes, but we got off to a very good start," said head coach Jerry Haas. "Paul McBride and Will Zalatoris had great first rounds and Eric Bae had a great second round. The greens are firm and fast and the pins are difficult, but we were able to score well today. We were able to separate from the field and set us up well for tomorrow."
The tournament will conclude on Sunday with the third and final round at the Duke University Golf Club.
