WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest volleyball fell to Davidson, 3-1, in its first match of the Demon Deacon Classic at LJVM Coliseum on Friday. The match was also the 2016 home opener for the Deacs.
The first set was controlled by Davidson (2-2) who jumped out to an early 10-4 lead that proved to be just too much for Wake Forest (0-2) to overcome. Senior Hanna Lee recorded four kills early in the first set to lead the Demon Deacon offense while the Wildcats took the set 25-19. The second set also proved challenging as the Deacs committed eight attack errors on 11 kills while the Wildcats recorded 15 kills and only three errors. The Wildcats took the set 25-16.
Coming out of the break, the Deacons would not go down without a fight in the third set. Neither team led by more than four and the score was tied a total of 10 times. Junior Kylie Long recorded eight kills with a .400 hitting percentage while back-to-back kills from Lee, who had nine on the night, sealed the set victory, 22-18 Wake Forest.
The Deacs continued to fight as they led a majority of the fourth set. Wake Forest gave up five of the last six points to finish the set at 26-24, and the match 3-1, in favor of Davidson.
Long finished the night with 19 kills while freshman Caroline Rassenfoss recorded 16, both tying season-highs. Sophomore Hailey Brooke McFadden tallied a career high 16 digs, surpassing her previous high of 14 set at Clemson on Nov. 6, 2015.
Wake Forest continues play in the Demon Deacon Classic with matches against College of Charleston (2-2) at 1 p.m. and Loyola Chicago (1-3) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3. Both matches will be played at the LJVM Coliseum.
