WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Demon Deacons tallied a season-high six goals in their 6-2 victory over Cal on Sunday at Kentner Stadium.
Wake Forest (5-4) maintained control throughout the entire game, starting with a goal from Emily Conroe in the 9th minute. Madi Julius quickly doubled the score for the Deacs with an unassisted goal in the 12th minute. California (2-6) cut the lead in half in the 15th minute with a goal from Katrina Carter but the Deacs swiftly brought the lead back to two with a goal from Jule Grashoff in the 22nd minute. The Deacs finished their strong first half with a goal from Nicola Pluta off a penalty corner to enter halftime up, 4-1.
The second half was much of the same. Nicola Pluta netted her second goal of the game in the 40th minute to bring the Deacs' lead to four. Cal's Lindsay Mathison scored her first goal of the season in the 47th minute with an assist from Katrina Carter to round-out the Bears' offense. Nicola Pluta completed her hat trick in the 53rd minute with an assist from Jule Grashoff to seal the game, 6-2, Wake Forest.
Pluta had a stellar game, recording three goals on four shots and two assists. She now has a team-leading nine goals this season.
For only the second time this season, the Deacs won in a game where the opponent recorded more shots. Cal tallied 12 shots, with nine of those being on goal, while Wake Forest recorded 9 shots, all on goal. Goalkeeper Cat O'Connor recorded six saves in the affair while Isla Bint recorded one after she replaced O'Connor in the 57th minute.
The Demon Deacons return to action and ACC play on Friday, Sept. 30th at Virginia. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
