Deacs Cruise Past Cornhuskers, 4-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 2-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team opened play at the ITA Kickoff Weekend with a 4-1 victory over Nebraska Friday (Jan. 27) evening inside the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. With the victory, the Deacs will face Georgia State on Saturday, Jan. 27, with the winner earning a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Wake Forest (4-0) opened to a quick 1-0 lead against the Cornhuskers (0-2) as the Deacs claimed a pair of doubles matches to secure the point. The tandem of Skander Manouri and Christian Seraphim, the top-ranked doubles team in the country, made quick work of Boyer/Antoljak, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot.
The Deacs clinched the point with a 6-3 victory by Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev at the No. 2 spot. Petros Chrysochos and Maksim Kan, making his spring debut, were leading 5-4 in their match when action was halted due to Wake Forest claiming the doubles point.
Gojo led the Deacs into singles action as he was nearly flawless in a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 singles spot to put Wake Forest ahead 2-0. After Nebraska pulled within one with a victory at No. 6, the Demon Deacons collected victories in the No. 1 and 5 slots to close out the match.
Chrysochos continued to pace the Deacs atop the lineup as the No. 1-ranked player in the world defeated Toby Boyer, 6-4, 6-2, to put Wake Forest ahead 3-1. Gadjiev, ranked No. 122 in the country, closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 5.
Mansouri and Seraphim had each won the first set of their respective matches when action was called following Gadjiev's victory.
The Deacs will close out play at the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday, Jan. 27, against Georgia State. First serve is set for 5 p.m. inside the Indoor Tennis Center.
