WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Ariel Stephenson scored a team-high 17 points while Elisa Penna added 15 as Wake Forest fell to NC State in its ACC home opener, 65-50, Sunday afternoon inside the LJVM Coliseum.
Stephenson added four assists and a steal for the Demon Deacons (9-6, 0-2), and Penna scored in double figures for the fifth-straight game this season and for the 12th time in her career. The sophomore added five rebounds, one block and one steal in the contest.
Amber Campbell tallied seven points on the afternoon and sits 11 points away from becoming the 24th member of the 1,000-point club.
Penna scored eight points in the opening frame as the Deacs took a 14-12 lead to the second quarter. NC State (13-4, 3-1 ACC), however, took command of the game in the second quarter, shooting 60 percent while holding Wake Forest to just one point. The Wolfpack went into halftime with a 27-15 advantage.
NC State continued to hold the Deacs at arm's-length throughout the second half. Wake Forest used an 8-0 run to cut the lead down to 10 with 7:48 remaining in the game, but were unable to get any closer to the Wolfpack.
Alex Sharp pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while blocking two shots for the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest returns to action Thursday, Jan. 12 against Clemson. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in the LJVM Coliseum.
