Demon Deacons Stumble at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Wake Forest volleyball team stumbled to a 3-0 loss against Virginia Tech on Friday night in Blacksburg.

The Demon Deacons (10-11, 2-7 ACC) have now dropped six straight matches after a 2-1 start to the conference season.

The Hokies (8-12, 2-8 ACC) pulled away late to take the first two sets and rallied from a substantial deficit to take the third.

Caroline Kuhn led Wake Forest with 14 kills, while also adding an outstanding .636 hitting percentage. Caitlyn Della led the Deacs in that category, hitting .778 for the match with seven kills. Della also led the team with three total blocks. Caroline Wolf was the only Wake Forest player to reach double-digit digs as she tallied 13.

The first set was closely contested and dominated by offense. The Demon Deacons hit .385 and were led by Kuhn, who totaled four kills. With the set tied, 18-18, Virginia Tech rallied to take seven of the final nine points to win the set, 25-20.

The Hokies improved to hit .417 in the second set, as they led most of the way and held off a late Wake Forest rally to take the set, 25-21. Kuhn continued her outstanding play for the Deacs. The freshman middle blocker delivered six kills in just seven total attacks.

Down 2-0 in the match, the Demon Deacons responded by jumping out to a 19-13 lead in the third set. However, the Hokies answered back with a 6-1 run to cut Wake Forest's lead to 20-19. After a timeout by the Deacs, Virginia Tech won the last six points to take the match.

Overall, the Wake Forest hit .269 as a team, while the Hokies produced a .318 hitting percentage. The Deacs were hurt in the service game, as they had just two aces to go along with nine service errors. Virginia Tech added eight aces with just six errors.

Up next, the Deacs will remain on the road to take on Virginia this Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
