RALEIGH, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team stumbled to a 3-0 defeat against NC State on Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh.
The Deacs (10-7, 2-3 ACC) held off five set points in the first set, but eventually fell, 32-30. From there, the Wolfpack (10-6, 5-0 ACC) seized control, winning the second and third sets, 25-18, to sweep the match.
Freshman Caroline Kuhn led the Deacs with 11 kills to go along with a career-high three service aces. Caroline Rassnefoss pitched in 10 kills. Katie Moore led the Deacs with four blocks.
In the longest set the team has played this year, Wake Forest fell to the Wolfpack, 32-30. After the Demon Deacons separated themselves midway through the set, NC State rallied back to stave off two set points for the Deacs. As the set moved past 25, Wake Forest fought off five set points before the Wolfpack eventually won the set and took a 1-0 match lead. Kuhn led the team with five kills in the set, while Rassenfoss and Kylie Long added four each.
NC State capitalized on the momentum it gained in the first set, controlling the action throughout the second set. After the Deacs battled back to cut their deficit to 21-18, the Wolfpack reeled off four straight points to take the set, 25-18. NC State produced a .370 hitting percentage in the set, compared to just .054 for the Demon Deacons.
The Wolfpack did not let up in the third set, as they took an early lead and never looked back on their way to another 25-18 win and a 3-0 match victory.
Overall, NC State produced a .341 hitting percentage, compared to the Wake Forest's .176. The Deacs did match the Wolfpack with 42 kills. The Demon Deacons also added five aces, while the Wolfpack tallied four.
