WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's basketball team opened the 2017-18 season with a 73-56 victory over Texas Southern Friday at LJVM Coliseum. All 10 Demon Deacons who saw action scored as they won their 16th season opener in the past 18 years.

Tyra Whitehead scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Demon Deacons. The sophomore more than doubled her previous career high of nine points. Amber Campbell added 12 points and freshman Ivana Raca had 10 points in her collegiate debut. Campbell also had a team-high six rebounds while Ariel Stephenson had a game-high six assists.

Wake Forest held a 17-12 lead after the first quarter, led by Whitehead, who scored the first six points of the season, and Raca, who scored the first six points of her career.

The Deacs opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run to extend the lead to 26-12. Wake Forest held a double-digit advantage for the remainder of the half and took a 39-22 lead at intermission. Whitehead led all scorers with 15 first-half points.

The teams played an even second half, each scoring 34 points after the break as the Demon Deacons closed out the 17-point victory.

The Demon Deacons conclude a season-opening homestand Sunday when they host Seton Hall. Game time at the LJVM Coliseum is 2 p.m.
