Deacs Fall at Pitt in Three Sets

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team battled in all three sets but fell, 3-0, at Pitt on Friday night.
Demon Deacon senior libero Caroline Wolf recorded six digs, giving her 2,015 for her career, which is the program record for career digs. Trina Maso de Moya was the previous record holder with 2,010.
Wake Forest (12-16, 4-12 ACC) dropped a hard-fought first set, 28-26, as the Panthers (20-6, 13-2 ACC) rallied from down to jump out to an early lead. The second set was closely contested, but Pitt made a late run to win the set, 25-22, and establish a 2-0 lead in the match. Once again, Wake Forest battled in the third, but the Panthers made another late run to take the match, 3-0. Kylie Long, Caroline Kuhn and Caroline Rassenfoss each recorded 10 kills to lead the Demon Deacons. Madeline Holt tallied assists on 31 of the team's 39 total kills. Hailey Brooke McFadden led the team with seven digs while Wolf added six in her record-breaking night.
The Deacs jumped out to a lead in the early stages of the first set and extended their lead to 20-14. However, the Panthers rallied back to tie the score at 23 apiece. The teams traded points until Pitt won three consecutive points to take the set, 28-26.
Wake Forest held a small lead throughout most of the second set, until the Panthers made a run to tie the score a 20-all. From there, the Panthers took five of the last seven points to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Both teams had strong offensive sets, with the Panthers hitting .394 and the Demon Deacons at .382. Katie Moore led Wake Forest with four kills.
The third set was more of the same, as the Demon Deacons jumped out to a slim lead at 17-14. The Panthers battled back for the third-straight set to tie the score at 19-all. The same as the second set, Pitt took five of the final seven points with the scored tied, 20-20, to win the match at 3-0.
Overall, the Panthers held a .288 to .263 edge in hitting percentage. Pitt also held an advantage in kills (51-39) and digs (41-27).
Up next, Wake Forest will break for a week before its final road trip of the season, which starts next Friday, Nov. 17 against Syracuse.
