Deacs Stay Undefeated at Home

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's tennis team earned a pair of victories against William & Mary and Liberty at the Wake Forest Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 11. The Demon Deacons (8-2) started off their morning with a 7-0 victory over the Tribe (3-4) of William & Mary. This is the first time since 2005 the Deacs have shutout the Tribe. The Deacs opened up doubles play with a 6-2 victory on the No. 1 doubles court thanks to the pair of Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko. Emma Davis and Chandler Carter came up short, losing 6-3 on the No. 2 court. Samantha Asch and Joanna Zalewski were able to clinch the doubles point for the Deacons with a 6-3 victory on court No. 3. The Deacs headed into singles play up 1-0.
Playing on court No. 4, Joanna Zalewski was the first to walk off the singles court, winning 6-3, 6-2. Shortly after, No. 70 Emma Davis defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-0. No. 53 Guerin clinched the match for the Deacs with a 6-3, 6-3 victory on the first singles court.
Ulyashchenko got off to a quick start winning the first set 6-1. After being challenged in the second set, Ulyashchenko came off court No. 3 victorious with a 7-5 win in the second set. On court No. 6, Asch came out on top 6-4, 6-2. Lastly, Carter, playing on court No. 5, went all the way to a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the match. Carter ultimately won 6-2, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (2).

The Deacs were able to carry their momentum from the morning match into the afternoon match to defeat Liberty (2-2) 4-0.
Guerin and Ulyashchenko set the pace for the Demon Deacons with a 6-3 victory playing on the No. 1 doubles court. Clinching the doubles point, Davis and Carter cruised to a 6-3 victory on the second court. On the No. 3 court, Courtney Meredith and Zalewski were trailing 5-4 as the match went unfinished.
With the Deacs up 1-0, Guerin was able to increase the lead as she went on to win her match 6-4, 6-2, playing at No. 1 singles. Playing on the No. 2 court, Davis was able to win the first set 6-1, but quickly fell 6-2, in the second set. Davis rallied back to a dominate 6-0 win in the third set to get a victory. After winning the first set 6-3, Carter, playing No. 5 singles, was forced into a 7-point tiebreak in the second set. Carter dominated in the tiebreak winning 7-1 which clinched the match for the Deacs.
Ulyashchenko, playing No. 3 singles, was battling back in the second set, 3-4, after dropping the first set 7-6 (5) as the match was called. On the No. 4 court, Zalewski lost the first set 7-6 (5) and was tied in the second set 3-3 as the match went unfinished. Playing at No. 6 singles, Luisa Fernandez lost the first set 6-1, rallied to a 6-1 victory in the second set and was trailing 4-1 as the match ended.
Guerin, Ulyashchenko, Zalewski and Asch all went undefeated during the two matches.
The Deacs return to action at home on Saturday, Feb. 18 to face Clemson and App State at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
