Deacs Rally to Beat Clemson and App State

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's tennis team recorded a pair of victories over Clemson and App State at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex on Saturday, Feb. 18. The Demon Deacons (10-2, 1-0) started off the morning session with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory against Clemson (2-5, 0-1). Today's victory over Clemson was the first since 2002 for the Demon Deacons over the Tigers.

Wake Forest got off to a slow start and had to battle back after losing the doubles point. Playing at No. 3 doubles, Kimmy Guerin and Luisa Fernandez were not able finish with a victory as they lost 6-3. On the No. 2 doubles court, Samantha Asch and Joanna Zalewski tied up the doubles score, 1-1, after winning their match 7-6 (5). However, Emma Davis and Chandler Carter were outplayed on the No. 1 court, losing 7-6 (7). The Deacs went into singles play down 1-0.

Zalewski, playing No. 3 singles, was first to walk off the court, losing 6-1, 7-5. Next, Asch cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory, at No. 5 singles, to gain some momentum for the Deacs. Fernandez contributed to the comeback by winning her singles match 6-2, 6-3 on the No. 6 court. No. 70 Davis was topped 6-1, 7-5 on the No. 2 court. With the Deacs down 3-2 Guerin and Carter were left battling for the win.

No. 53 Guerin found herself in an early hole after losing the first set 6-2 on the first court. Guerin battled back in the second set to take it 7-6 (5). Taking all the momentum, Guerin rallied to a 6-2 victory to make the score 3-3. On court No. 4, Carter found herself in a similar situation. Carter was forced into a tiebreaker in the first set where she won 7-6 (3). Her opponent took the second set 6-3 before Carter clinched the win for the Deacs, winning the third set 6-2.

Wake Forest 6, App Sate 1

The Demon Deacons managed to defeat the Mountaineers (3-6) following their comeback against Clemson.

Setting the pace for the Deacs were Davis and Carter on the No. 1 court. The duo cruised to a 6-1 victory. Following their lead, Courtney Meredith and Alexis Franco topped their opponents 6-1 on court No. 3. Keeping the pattern going, Asch and Zalewski earned a 6-1 victory on the second court as the Demon Deacons claimed the doubles point.

Asch carried the momentum from doubles into singles play as she won 6-0, 6-1 on court No. 3. Shortly after, Davis earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory on the first court. Zalewski, playing No. 2 singles, cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win to clinch the match for the Deacs. On court No. 5, Meredith earned her first singles win of the season, winning 6-3, 6-3.

Fernandez got off to an early start with a 6-1 victory in the first set on court No. 4. Forced into a tiebreaker for the second set, Fernandez ultimately came out victorious as she won 7-6 (5). Alexis Franco made her first dual match singles appearance for the Deacs today. Franco got off to a slow start as she lost the first set 6-1. Franco rallied back in the second set to a 7-5 victory to force a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the match. In the end, Franco came up short losing the tiebreak 10-4.

Next time out, the Demon Deacons travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on the Seminoles of Florida State. First serve is set for 4 p.m. at the Speicher Tennis Center.
