GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest sophomore forward John Collins was named ACC Player of the Week, conference officials announced Monday (Feb. 20). Collins posted a pair of double-doubles in road games at Clemson and Duke last week.
The 6-10 native of West Palm Beach, Fla., averaged 30.0 points and 12.5 rebounds in the contests, shooting 78.1 percent from the floor and 90.9 percent from the free throw line.
On Tuesday at Clemson, Collins set a new career high with 29 points on 12-of-14 shooting from the floor and 5-of-5 from the line. He also grabbed 10 rebounds to record his 12th double-double of the season.
He followed with a career-high 31 points and 15 rebounds Saturday at No. 12 Duke. It was the first 30-and-15 game by an opponent at Cameron Indoor Stadium since Al Thornton of Florida State had 37 and 15 in 2006 and was the first 30-and-15 game by a Demon Deacon since Rodney Rogers in 1993 (31 and 15 at Florida State). Collins' 31 points came on 13-of-18 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the line. His 15 rebounds were one shy of a career high.
It is the second honor of the season for Collins, who also won the award on Jan. 23. He becomes the first Demon Deacon to earn multiple ACC Player of the Week honors in a season since Jeff Teague in 2008-09.
The Demon Deacons (15-12, 6-9 ACC) return to action Wednesday as they host Pitt. Game time at the LJVM Coliseum is 7 p.m. and the contest will air on the Regional Sports Networks.
