KNOXVILLE, TENN. -- The No. 3 Wake Forest men's tennis team rebounded from a slow start to cruise past No. 34 Tennessee, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at Barksdale Stadium.
For just the second time this season, and first since their season opener, the Demon Deacons (9-1) failed to claim the doubles point as the Volunteers (7-4) claimed victories on the top two courts. After the No. 1-ranked tandem of Mansouri/Seraphim fell 6-3 in the top spot, the Deacs evened the doubles action with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles behind the play of Chrysochos/Uspensky. The point came down to a tiebreaker between Gojo/Gadjiev and the 25th-ranked duo from Tennessee. In the end, the Volunteers claimed a 7-5 tiebreaker victory to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.
Tennessee's lead wouldn't last for long, however, as the Deacs won five of their six matches in straight sets. No. 34 Christian Seraphim evened the team score at 1-all with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles. Eighth-ranked Skander Mansouri pushed Wake Forest ahead for good as he cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory on Court 2. Alan Gadjiev (6-3, 6-4) and Dennis Uspensky (6-3, 6-2) won back-to-back matches in the sixth and fifth spots, respectively, to clinch the match in favor the visiting Demon Deacons.
With the match in hand, Borna Gojo extended the Deacs' advantage to 5-1 with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory at No. 3 singles. After dropping his opening set, 6-3, top-ranked Petros Chrysochos responded with a 6-3 victory in the second set to force a third and final set. In the last set, Chrysochos jumped out to an early lead and clinched the singles play sweep for Wake Forest with a 6-1 victory.
Wake Forest remains on the road for their sixth and seventh consecutive matches away from home on Saturday and Monday, March 4 & 6, as the Deacs travel to take on Texas and TCU. The Demon Deacons' match against the Longhorns, ranked seventh in the latest ITA rankings, will be a rematch of a quarterfinal matchup at the recently played ITA National Team Indoor Championship. On Saturday, Feb. 18, the Deacs held off a late Texas rally to claim a 4-3 decision to advance to the semifinals of the 16-team tournament. First serve in Austin is set for 4 p.m.
