WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - California State University, Los Angeles head volleyball coach Randi Smart will join the Wake Forest staff as the associate head coach beginning immediately, head coach Bill Ferguson announced Wednesday, Feb. 8.
"Randi and I worked well together previously and she is an excellent fit for our coaching team and our student athletes," said Ferguson. "She has great energy in the gym and her training style fits well with our process."
Smart will take over for assistant coach Lindsay Allman, who recently was recently named head coach at Indiana State University. Allman came to Wake Forest in February 2016 where she was the program's interim head coach from April 22 through June 4 before taking on the role of assistant coach for the 2016 season.
Smart will join Ferguson and assistant coach Arturo Rivera.
"Randi will serve as our associate head coach," continued Ferguson. "She will run our internal operations, assist with coaching our setters and call our offense. Arturo Rivera will serve as our recruiting coordinator and call our block and defense."
Smart has spent the last nine seasons at Cal State LA, including the last eight as the head coach. During her time with the Golden Eagles, she coached eight All-Americans and took the Eagles to four NCAA DII Tournaments while recording eight winning seasons.
She joined Cal State LA after spending a combined 10 years as an assistant coach at Cal Poly Pomona and the University of La Verne.
Smart competed for two seasons at Utah State where she earned "Rookie of the Year" honors and went on to play at LSU for her final two collegiate seasons where she earned All-SEC honors. After graduating from LSU in 1998, Smart played overseas in Austria for one year.
Smart and her husband Craig have two children, Tyler and Jordan.
"Her life experience and coaching talent make her a great role model for our student athletes," continued Ferguson. "I'm thrilled to welcome Randi, Craig, Tyler and Jordan!"
