Deacs Fall in Top 50 Match Up

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --The No. 23 Wake Forest women's tennis team lost for the first time at home this season as No. 34 Notre Dame won 4-1 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.

The Demon Deacons (11-4, 2-2 ACC) started off on the wrong foot as the Fighting Irish (13-1, 4-0 ACC) took the doubles point. The duo of Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko were first to finish up on court No. 1 as the duo came up short, losing 6-2. Emma Davis and Chandler Carter played the No. 2 doubles spot where they were defeated 6-3 as Notre Dame clinched the doubles point. On court No. 3, Courtney Meredith and Joanna Zalewski were ahead 4-3 as the match transitioned to singles play.

The Deacs were unable to turn the match around in singles play. Ulyashchenko was first to walk off the court after falling to her opponent 6-1, 6-4 on court No. 3. Playing No. 2 singles, Davis battled in the second set but ultimately came up short, losing 6-3, 6-4. Guerin, ranked No. 50 nationally, got the first point on the board for Wake Forest with a 7-5, 6-4 victory on court No. 1. Playing on court No. 4, Zalewski dropped the first set 7-6 (7) in a tight tiebreaker. Zalewski was unable to comeback as she dropped the second set 6-1 as Notre Dame clinched the match.

On court No. 5, Carter was in the midst of the third set. Carter dropped the first set 7-6 (5) and cruised to a 6-0 victory in the second set. Carter was trailing 2-1 as the match was called. Playing on court No. 6, Luisa Fernandez fell in the first set 6-3 and rallied back to a 6-4 victory in the second set. Fernandez was down 1-0 as the match was called.

The Deacs return to action on Sunday, March 19 as they are set to take on Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
