Deacs Come from Behind to Defeat No. 32 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --The No. 29 Wake Forest women's tennis team came back to defeat No. 32 Virginia 4-3 on Friday inside the Boar's Head Sports Club.
The Demon Deacons (14-5, 4-3 ACC) started the match on the wrong foot as the Cavaliers (7-8, 5-3 ACC) took the doubles point. On court No. 2, the duo of Chandler Carter and Emma Davis fell 6-3 to put Virginia one court away from clinching the doubles point. Alexis Franco and Courtney Meredith were topped 6-3 on the third court as Virginia claimed the doubles point. Playing No. 1 doubles, Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko led 5-3 as the match transitioned into singles play.
Going into singles down 1-0, the Deacs turned the match around to complete a come-from-behind victory. On court No. 3, Ulyashchenko was topped 6-4, 6-3 as Virginia took a 2-0 lead. Luisa Fernandez cut into the lead of the Cavaliers thanks to a 6-1, 6-4 win on court No. 6. Playing first singles, No. 62 Guerin was victorious, 6-3, 7-6 (6), against No. 44 Rosie Johanson. With the scored tied up 2-2, the Deacs took the lead for the first time of the match thanks to No. 110 Davis beating her opponent 6-4, 7-6 (2) on court No. 2.
Playing on court No. 5, Carter fell short 7-5 in the first set before taking the second set 6-2 to force a third set. Ultimately, Carter was bested 6-0 in the third set. On court No. 4, Joanna Zalewski found herself in the deciding match. After losing the first set 7-5, Zalewski was able to complete the comeback and take the win 6-3, 6-4.
Wake Forest returns to action on Sunday, April 2 at 10 a.m. at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex as they take on Georgia Tech.
