AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Wake Forest men's golf team began play at the 3M Augusta Invitational Saturday with the opening two rounds at Forest Hills Golf Club. The Demon Deacons, in search of their third consecutive win, shot 14-under over 36 holes to end Saturday's play in fourth place.
Illinois and New Mexico share the 36-hole lead at 19-under par. UCF is in third place at 17-under, while the Deacs are at 14-under. Wake Forest shot a 7-under 281 in both the first and second round on Saturday.
Will Zalatoris led Wake Forest with rounds of 69 and 71 and is tied for 11th place at 4-under. Eric Bae and Lee Detmer are tied for 18th place at 3-under. Paul McBride shot 2-under and is tied for 27th place, while Kyle Sterbinsky is at 3-over.
"The weather was beautiful and the conditions were ideal for scoring," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We made a few mistakes, which is why we are five shots behind. It is still nice to be 14-under when you aren't playing your best. We will need a hot round tomorrow as the weather will be good again. It is always special to play in Augusta in April."
The final round of the 3M Augusta Invitational is scheduled for Sunday at the Forest Hill Golf Club.
