
Deacs Fall to No. 3 North Carolina

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 26 Wake Forest women's tennis team was topped, 7-0, by No. 3 North Carolina on Saturday morning at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
The Demon Deacons (16-8, 6-6 ACC) lost the doubles point to the Tar Heels (24-2, 10-1 ACC) and could not rebound. Playing second doubles, Chandler Carter and Courtney Meredith were defeated 6-1. Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko fell 6-2 on the first court as North Carolina clinched the doubles point. Pairing up for the first time this season, Emma Davis and Luisa Fernandez had a 5-2 lead as the match transitioned into singles play.
Playing on court No. 2, Davis found herself in a three-set thriller against No. 8 Sara Daavettila. Davis cruised to a 6-2 victory in the first set before dropping the second set 6-2. The third set was played as a 10 point tiebreaker in which Davis got out to an early 6-0 lead. In the end, Daavettila outlasted Davis to take the tiebreak, 10-7. At first singles, No. 52 Guerin had the task of taking on Haley Carter, who is ranked second nationally. In a close first set, Guerin forced a tiebreak where she came up short 7-6 (7-4). Guerin tried to rally back from being down one set but was ultimately defeated 6-4 in the second set.
On the third court, Ulyashchenko kept it close in the first set before she was topped 6-4. Her opponent, No. 27 Jessie Aney, went on to win the second set 6-0. Playing No. 4 singles, Carter met her first nationally ranked opponent, No. 47 Alexa Graham. Carter was defeated 6-0, 6-0. At th sixth singles position, Fernandez also met her first nationally ranked opponent of the season, No. 86 Makenna Jones. Ultimately, Fernandez was topped 6-0, 6-0. Lastly, Meredith fell 6-1, 6-0 on court No. 6 as the Tar Heels claimed a 7-0 victory.
The Deacs are back in action Friday, April 21 as they are set to take on Syracuse. First serve is set for 4 p.m. at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. The Demon Deacons will then close out the home portion of their schedule on Sunday, April 23, against Boston College. Prior to the match, Samantha Asch, Luisa Fernandez and Kimmy Guerin will be recognized prior to the match.
