CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. – The Wake Forest men's tennis team clinched at least a share of the program's first-ever ACC regular season title Friday evening, as the Demon Deacons cruised past Boston College 6-1 at the Flynn Recreation Complex.
The Deacons (24-1, 11-0 ACC) can claim the regular season title outright on Sunday with a win over Notre Dame or a loss by Virginia, which takes its 10-1 ACC record on the road to Florida State. Wake Forest locked up the No. 1 seed in next week's ACC Tournament by virtue of the Deacs' 5-2 victory over the Cavaliers back on March 31.
Wake Forest's 11 league victories set a new program record for most conference wins in a year, topping the 10 wins the Deacons recorded a season ago. Friday's win also marked the 16th consecutive win on the season, breaking the previous record of 15 set by the 1977 squad that opened the season 15-0.
Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim, the top-ranked doubles team in the country, recorded their 31st victory as a doubles team this season with a 6-1 decision in the top doubles spot. The 31 wins set a new Wake Forest record for most wins in a season by a doubles team, topping Steven Forman and Cory Parr's mark of 30 wins, set in 2009.
The Deacs clinched the doubles point as Petros Chrysochos and Dennis Uspensky moved up to No. 2 doubles for the first time this season and picked up a 6-2 decision. Borna Gojo and Maksim Kan played at No. 3 doubles, where their match went unfinished as play moved to singles.
In singles play, the Deacons won in straight sets on the top five courts to put the match out of reach. Chrysochos (6-1, 6-1), Mansouri (6-2, 6-1) and Gojo (6-3, 6-1) took the top three singles spots, respectively, and picked up wins. Seraphim (6-3, 6-3) took his match on court No. 4 while Kan played his first ACC match of the season, taking a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 decision on No. 5. Freshman Charles Parry made his second appearance in the Wake Forest lineup this season, and first against an ACC foe, but was unable to complete the Demon Deacon sweep, falling 6-2, 6-1 on court 6 as Boston College (5-16, 0-11 ACC) picked up its lone point.
The Deacons continue their three-match road trip to close out ACC and regular season play on Sunday, April 23, at Notre Dame. First serve in South Bend is set for 12 p.m. The complete draw for next week's ACC Tournament will be available following the completion of play Sunday.
