Deacs Fall to Orange in ACC Thriller

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 30 Wake Forest women's tennis team was defeated by Syracuse, 4-3, at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex earlier this Friday.
The Demon Deacons (16-9, 6-7 ACC) took the doubles point over the Orange (8-12, 5-8 ACC) but were unable to hold off the Orange in singles. Playing No. 2 singles, Chandler Carter and Courtney Meredith cruised to a 6-0 victory over the duo of Anna Shkudun and Dina Hegab. Following suit on the third court, Emma Davis and Luisa Fernandez earned a 6-0 victory to clinch the doubles point for the Deacs. The No. 54 duo of Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko trailed 4-3 as the match transitioned into singles play.
No. 57 Guerin got the Deacs out to a quick start in singles thanks to a 6-3, 6-2 victory on the first court over No. 77 Miranda Ramirez. Playing third singles, No. 93 Davis earned a 6-4, 6-4 win against No. 87 Gabriela Knutson. Returning back to action today was Samantha Asch. Asch was tasked with playing No. 4 singles where she was topped 6-4, 6-4.
On the sixth singles court, Luisa Fernandez was defeated by Dina Hegab 6-3, 6-2. Carter, playing fifth singles, took the first set 6-2 before falling in the next two sets 6-4, 6-3. Syracuse tied up the match 3-all as all eyes turned to Ulyashchenko on court three for the deciding match. Ulyashchenko took a hard-fought first set 7-6 (2) in the tiebreaker. Unfortunately, Ulyashchenko could not keep the momentum in her favor as she was defeated 6-3, 6-2 in the following sets.
The Demon Deacons return to action on Sunday, April 23 against Boston College. First serve is set for 12 p.m. on senior day. Asch, Fernandez and Guerin will be honored in a senior day ceremony prior to the start of the match.
