Heppenstall Named Athletics Canada Junior Athlete of the Year

ONTARIO, Canada -- Robert Heppenstall has been named the 2016 Athletics Canada Junior Athlete of the Year, Athletics Canada announced Friday afternoon. Heppenstall also received the Eric E. Coy Memorial Trophy from the organization.

Heppenstall had a stellar 2016 campaign capped by a fifth-place finish at the IAAF World U20 Championships. He placed third in the senior division at the Canadian Olympic Trials and broke the Canadian junior record for the 800m run with the time of 1:47:35, which he achieved at the 2016 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

In his first collegiate season for the Demon Deacons, Heppenstall finished fifth in the 800m run at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. He qualified for the championships after breaking a school and conference meet record with his 1:47.35 time at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships. He also won the outdoor ACC title before finishing eighth at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He capped his 2016 season as the first Demon Deacon to receive the ACC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year award.

This season, Heppenstall finished fifth in the 800m run at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships after placing third in the conference meet. He finished fifth in his first competition of the outdoor season at the Florida Relays and his time of 1:47.75 is currently seventh in the nation.

The 2016 Athletics Canada annual award winners will officially be recognized in Ottawa on July 5 as part of a special ceremony at the 2017 Canadian Track & Field Championships.
