KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's golf team began play at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate Saturday with the opening 36 holes of play at The Club at Irish Creek. The Demon Deacons shot 4-under during the first two rounds and enter the final round in fourth place, seven shots off the lead.
Kennesaw State has the second round lead at 11-under. Florida State is in second at 9-under and North Florida is third at 8-under. The Deacs are tied with UNCG at 4-under.
Lee Detmer led the Deacs on the first day, shooting 2-under with a first round even pat 71, followed by a second round 69 to be tied for eighth on the individual leaderboard. Will Zalatoris and Eric Bae are tied for 14th place at 1-under after two rounds. Paul McBride is at even par entering the final round.
"We were a bit sloppy in spots today and striking the ball wasn't as sharp as we have seen," said head coach Jerry Haas. "We need five solid scores tomorrow. Our goal, regardless of where we finish, is to have the low round of the last day."
The final round of the Irish Creek Intercollegiate is scheduled for Sunday at the The Club at Irish Creek.
