KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team concluded play at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate Sunday with a strong final round at The Club at Irish Creek. The Demon Deacons shot 8-under, the low round of the day, to finish second at 12-under.
The tournament was Wake Forest's fifth consecutive top-five finish. North Florida finished at 14-under to finish two shots ahead of the Demon Deacons.
Three Deacs finished in the top 10 of the individual leaderboard. Paul McBride had the low round of the day, a 5-under 66, to finish tied for fourth at 5-under for the tournament. Will Zalatoris was tied for eighth at 3-under after a final round 69. Lee Detmer shot even par 71 on Sunday to finish tied for 10th at 2-under.
Eric Bae shot even par 71 to finish at 1-under, tied for 16th place. Kyle Sterbinsky had a final round 70, highlighted by a hole-in-one with a six iron from 198 yards at No. 15.
"Our goal to start today was to be the low round of the day and we accomplished that by shooting 8-under," said head coach Jerry Haas. "I know the guys were disappointed to not come away with the win. We were a bit sloppy in some areas, but I saw some good golf today and some guys really competed hard. Congratulations to Kyle for making a hole-in-one on No. 15."
The Demon Deacons will return to action April 21-23 with the ACC Championship at Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton, S.C.
