CLINTON, S.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team began play Friday at the 2017 ACC Championship with first round play at Musgrove Mill Golf Club. The Demon Deacons shot 4-over during the opening round and are in sixth place.
Duke has the first round lead at 11-under, followed by Florida State at 10-under and Clemson at 9-under. Georgia Tech is fourth at even par with NC State at 3-over and the Deacs at 4-over.
"We only had nine birdies today and when you see the leaders at 11 and 10-under, it shows that you can score on this course," said head coach Jerry Haas. "I was hoping we could get it back to even at the end of the day, but weren't able to do that. We are a very good team that just didn't play very well today. We are not out of it and have 36 holes left. If we play two good rounds of golf, we have a chance."
Paul McBride led the Deacs during the first round with a 1-under round of 71. Eric Bae, making his ACC Championship debut, shot an even par round of 72. Will Zalatoris had a 1-over round of 73, while Lee Detmer had a four-over 76. Cameron Young rounded out the lineup with an 81.
Due to the forecast of inclement weather on Sunday, the tournament will conclude Saturday with 36 holes of play. The second round will tee off at 7:30 a.m., with the final round teeing off immediately following the conclusion of the second round.
