CLINTON, S.C. – The Wake Forest men's golf team finished third at the 2017 ACC Championship as second and third round play was contested Saturday at the Musgrove Mill Golf Club. With the forecast of inclement weather on Sunday, the final 36 holes of the championship were played Saturday with the Demon Deacons moving up from sixth place to third place during the final round.
Duke won the title, shooting 14-under over the three rounds. Clemson was the runner-up at 2-under, followed by the Demon Deacons at 3-over, highlighted by a third round 286, the lowest round of the afternoon.
Paul McBride shot a second round 71 before a final round 3-under 69 to finish in a four-way tie for first place at 5-under for the tournament. In the playoff to decide the individual title, Virginia's Jimmy Stanger birdied the first hole of competition to win the championship.
"I was so proud of Paul and how he competed this week," said head coach Jerry Haas. "He made some big shots and put himself in position to win an ACC championship. All the guys really battled today and for the 36 holes, we were right there for the low rounds of the day. Obviously third place isn't what we wanted, but these guys played hard. It was a tough day and with the wind, it was tricky to pick a club. I know the guys are disappointed, but we now get to regroup, get through final exams and prepare for NCAAs."
Will Zalatoris posted his fifth top-five finish of the season, tying for fifth place at 4-under, one shot out of the playoff. He shot the low round of the second round with a 4-under 68 before ending the day with a 1-under final round 71.
Eric Bae finished tied for 18th place at 3-over par. He had a second round 72, matching Friday's first round, before a final round 75. Cameron Young, after a second round 80 in the morning, ended the tournament with a 1-under 71 to finish the tournament at 16-over. Lee Detmer finished at 17-over following rounds of 78 and 79 on Saturday.
The Demon Deacons will await the NCAA selections on May 4. The NCAA Regionals will be held at six sites from May 15-17.
