Demon Deacons Fall in NCAA Opening Round

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Wake Forest women's tennis fell in heartbreak fashion in the opening round of the NCAA Championship Friday morning, as the Demon Deacons fell to Texas 4-3 at the Carolina Tennis Center in Columbia, South Carolina.
The Demon Deacons (18-11) entered the tournament as the 33rd ranked team in the country and looked to upset the 22nd ranked Longhorns (14-8), and opened up play by taking the doubles point. After Texas won on court 2, Emma Davis and Alexis Franco evened the doubles score with a 6-3 victory at the No. 3 slot. With the doubles point on the line, Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko outlasted their opponents in the top spot, 6-4, to take a 1-0 lead into singles.
Texas evened the score in singles with a victory in the No. 6 spot to even things up at 1-all before Wake Forest regained the lead in what turned into back-and-forth match. Chandler Carter pushed the Deacs ahead 2-1 with a pair of tiebreaker victories to earn a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1) victory. Davis, ranked 89th in the country, rallied from one set down to defeat No. 72 Neda Koprcina. After falling 6-3 in the opening set, Davis came back to take the final two sets, 6-1, 6-3, and push the Deacs within a point of victory.
Wake Forest's bid to upset the Longhorns fell just short, however, as Texas claimed the final two matches to come back and close out the 4-3 decision.
Guerin's season will continue, as she will represent the Demon Deacons in the 2017 NCAA Women's Singles Championship, held May 24-29 in Athens, Georgia.
