AUSTIN, Texas – The Wake Forest men's golf team opened play at the NCAA Austin Regional with Monday's first round at the University of Texas Golf Club. The Demon Deacons shot a 10-over 294 during the first round and are tied for eighth place after the opening day.
The top five teams at the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships. The Demon Deacons are four shots out of a three-way tie for fourth place with two rounds remaining.
"We did not have a good opening round," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The good thing for us is that there are still 36 holes to play. We just need to make some more birdies."
Wake Forest was led on the opening day by ACC Player of the Year Will Zalatoris, who shot a 2-under 69. He is tied for sixth place on the individual leaderboard.
Paul McBride shot a 3-over 74, while Lee Detmer shot a 75 and Eric Bae had a 76. Cameron Young rounded out the lineup with a first round 78.
The tournament continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday at the University of Texas Golf Club.
