WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 17 Wake Forest surrendered a pair of first-inning runs and was unable to bounce back in an 8-0 loss to Boston College at David F. Couch Ballpark on Saturday evening.
Dan Metzdorf tossed 6.0 shutout innings for the Eagles (19-25, 8-18 ACC), and John Witkowski and Donovan Casey combined in relief to complete the Boston College shutout.
For the Demon Deacons (31-14, 14-9 ACC), Donnie Sellers settled in after the first inning and allowed three runs (two earned) in 6.0 frames, tying his career-high with six strikeouts.
Wake Forest loaded up the bases in the fifth on a Keegan Maronpot double and walks by Jonathan Pryor and Jake Mueller, but Metzdorf forced an inning-ending groundout.
After plating an unearned run in the fourth, the Eagles broke the game open on a bases-loaded, two-out double by Mitch Bigras in the seventh, which extended the lead to 6-0. BC then plated two more in the eighth.
Three Deacs walked in the ninth before Casey entered and forced a groundout on his first and only pitch.
Wake Forest will look to clinch the series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., as the Deacs will be holding their annual "Strike Out ALS" game, raising money for The ALS Association NC Chapter.
