WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team reported to campus for its first practice on Tuesday afternoon. The Deacs have just 17 days until they begin the 2017 season, taking on Morgan State on Aug. 25 at 4:30 p.m. in Greensboro, N.C. as part of the Spartan-Demon Deacon Classic.
Bill Ferguson begins his second season in charge of the Deacs. Assistant coach Arturo Rivera joins him in his second year on staff, while associate head coach Randi Smart begins her first season at Wake Forest.
The team finished 2017 with a 9-22 record that included a 5-15 mark in ACC competition. However, the team returns 10 of 12 players that appeared in a match last season. They also add a nine-player freshman class to the mix.
Senior outside hitter Kylie Long earned a spot on the preseason All-ACC team that was voted on by the league's coaches. A 6-2 senior from Plano, Texas, Long led the Deacs in kills (447), kills per set (3.63), and total attacks (1302) in 2016. She also finished second on the team in digs with 272.
In addition to Long, senior libero Caroline Wolf returns to the team. She has led the team in digs in each of her first three seasons with the Deacs.
The Deacs will play all 2017 home matches in the LJVM Coliseum. The team opens its home schedule on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. against William & Mary. The match is part of the Wake Forest Invitational, held Sept. 8-9.
