Deacs Continue Play at Duke James Bonk Invite

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's tennis team continued play at the Duke James Bonk Invite Saturday (Sept. 16) afternoon, with redshirt sophomore Alan Gadjiev advancing to the fifth-place match in the top flight.
Competing in the A1 singles flight, Gadjiev dropped his opening match of the day to Mario Paccini of Elon, 6-4, 6-3. Gadjiev rebounded in his next match, defeating Javier Amantegui, 6-3, 7-6 (5). On Sunday Gadjiev will play for fifth place in the flight when he takes on Maximillian Scholl of George Washington.
Freshman Yuval Solomon collected the first victories of his collegiate career, winning a pair of matches Saturday in the A2 singles flight. Against Diego Vives of Princeton, Solomon cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory. After dropping the first set to Sean Sculley, 6-2, Solomon rebounded to win the second and third sets by 6-4 margins. In Sunday's fifth-place match, Solomon will take on Duke's Catalin Mateas, the No. 2 seed in the flight.
Gadjiev and Solomon also teamed up in doubles for the first time Saturday, defeating the duo of Duarte and Deshmukh, 8-5.
Gadjiev and Solomon will conclude play at the Duke James Bonk Invite on Sunday.
Elsewhere, action began at the Columbus Challenger, where Skander Mansouri and Julian Zlobinsky are competing in the qualifying draw. Zlobinsky began his run on Saturday with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alex Kobelt. In the second round of qualifying, Zlobinsky will face No. 4 seed in qualifying, Luke Bambridge. Mansouri earned the No. 7 seed in qualifying and a first-round bye. He will face Alexander Brown, who won via walkover, in his first match of the tournament. If Mansouri and Zlobinsky were to win their next match, the two would face each other for a spot in the main draw on the line.
