BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wake Forest men's golf team had a strong first day of the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate on Monday, shooting 9-under par to claim a four-shot lead through 36 holes. Four Demon Deacons shot at or under par during the first day of play on the course which has been the site of two PGA Championships.
"Overall, it was a good day," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The course is very difficult and the guys really had to grind out there. We did not play all that well, but the guys hung in there and I'm proud of that. We have a chance tomorrow to go out and play some good golf and win another tournament, and that is what you look for at every event."
The Demon Deacons lead Notre Dame (5-under) by four strokes entering the final round, while host UAB is in third at 4-under.
Paul McBride is T-3rd after the first day at 5-under, shooting a 1-under 71 in the morning and a 4-under 68 in the afternoon. He is joined in the top five by Cameron Young, who had rounds of 69 and 72 to end the day at 3-under and tied for fifth. Eric Bae is also under par through 36 holes, shooting rounds of 72 and 71 for 1-under. Will Zalatoris is at even par following rounds of 73 and 71.
The tournament concludes Tuesday at Shoal Creek Golf Club with the third and final round.
