No. 13 Wake Forest Downed by No. 3 Virginia

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 13 Wake Forest field hockey team stumbled to a 2-0 loss to No. 3 Virginia on Friday evening at Kentner Stadium.
With the game scoreless in the 57th minute, Virginia's Rachel Robinson found the back of the net off a corner to break the scoreless tie. Minutes later, the Cavaliers (10-1, 3-0 ACC) sealed the win on Tara Vittese's penalty stroke goal.
For the game, the Cavaliers held a 19-3 shot advantage and a 13-1 penalty corner edge over the Deacs (5-5, 2-2 ACC).
Despite the loss, Isla Bint had a strong game in goal for Wake Forest. The sophomore goalkeeper tallied eight saves and turned away multiple good looks from the Cavaliers early in the contest.
The Demon Deacons played solid defense in the first half, keeping Virginia's strong offensive attack off the scoreboard. The Cavaliers held a 9-2 shot advantage in the half and earned six penalty corners. Nicola Pluta and Anne van Hoof earned the best first-half looks for the Deacs, but Virginia keeper Carrera Lucas deflected both shots away.
In the second half, the Cavaliers continued to apply pressure to the Deacs. In the 57th minute, Virginia broke through, as Robinson snuck the game-winner past Bint. In the final minutes of the game, Vittese added her NCAA-leading 21st goal on a penalty stroke.
Emily Adamson, van Hoof and Pluta delivered one shot each to lead the Deacs.
Up next, Wake Forest steps out of conference to host Liberty this Sunday, Oct. 1 at 1 p.m.
