Wake Forest Takes Down No. 18 Arkansas

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Wake Forest women's tennis team stormed back to defeat No. 18 Arkansas, 4-2, on Friday afternoon in Columbus in their first match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
Wake Forest (3-0) picked up its first win over a top-20 opponent since defeating No. 10 Virginia, 4-3, on March 20, 2016.
In doubles action, the Razorbacks (1-1) took control, winning, 6-3, at No. 3 before clinching the first point of the match with a 6-2 win over No. 42 Eliza Omirou and Anna Ulyashchenko at No. 1. Emma Davis and Chandler Carter were tied, 4-4, in their match at No. 2 when the Razorbacks clinched.
Down 1-0 heading into singles play, Davis quickly swung momentum back toward Wake Forest with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 1. The Demon Deacons took a 2-1 lead in the match when Mary Caroline Meredith prevailed, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 6.
Joanna Zalewski outlasted Tatum Rice in three sets to put Wake Forest one point away from taking the match. Moments later, the Razorbacks closed the gap with a win at No. 3.
However, the Deacs clinched the match when Ulyashchenko won a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Natsuho Arakawa, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) In the No. 2 position, Omirou led 2-6, 6-4, 5-2 when Ulyashchenko clinched the Wake Forest victory.
Up next, the Deacs return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. against No. 14 Ohio State. The winner will earn a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships.
