WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest ranks 17th in the nation in the NACDA Director’s Cup standings following the conclusion of the fall sports season.
The Director’s Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in NCAA Championships.
Wake Forest scored a total of 221 points during fall competition with three teams earning bids to their respective NCAA Championships and the football team receiving a bid to the Belk Bowl. The Demon Deacons tallied 73 points for a fifth place finish in men’s soccer and added 53 points from field hockey and 50 from women’s soccer. Football added 45 points with its Belk Bowl win over Texas A&M.
Stanford leads the Director’s Cup standings with 523 points. Wake Forest is fifth in the ACC behind only NC State, Duke, Virginia and North Carolina. The Deacons are tied for 17th with Iowa State.
Ranking 17th at the conclusion of the fall is the best start to a year by Wake Forest since ranking 16th following the fall of 2009.
The Capital One Cup also measures a team’s sports performance tough it differs in that it separates men’s and women’s sports while the Director’s Cup measures both men’s and women’s teams into a single score. Wake Forest ranks 15th in the nation in the Capital One Cup in men’s sports following the fall.
