WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A pair of Wake Forest football players earned ACC and national recognition for their performances in Saturday's 56-24 win over Rice at BB&T Field.
Wide receiver Greg Dorth and quarterback Sam Hartman both earned ACC Player of the Week awards. Dortch was named as the Receiver of the Week while Hartman earned recognition as the Rookie of the Week.
In addition, Dortch was named to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll. The Paul Hornung Award, now in its ninth season, is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission and football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung. Penn State's Saquon Barkley won the award in 2017.
Dortch, a 5-9, 170-pound redshirt sophomore from Richmond, Va. (Highland Springs), tied his own school record with four touchdown catches in the win over Rice on Saturday. Dortch had touchdown catches of 54, 10, 38 and four yards. He finished the game with 11 receptions for 163 yards. The 54-yard catch marked a career-long for Dortch who has now caught 14 touchdown passes in 13 career games. Dortch added one punt return for 14 yards and a kickoff return for 21 yards as he accumulated 198 all-purpose yards.
This week, Dortch ranks third in the nation in all-purpose yards with 196.2 yards per game. He ranks fifth in the nation in combined kick return yards, first nationally in punt return touchdowns, eighth in punt return average, 14th in receiving touchdowns, second in receptions per game, sixth in receiving yards and fifth in receiving yards per game.
Hartman, a 6-1, 190-pound true freshman from Cornelius, NC (Oceanside Collegiate) completed 15 of 17 passes for 241 yards and four touchdowns against Rice on Saturday. Hartman went three-for-five for 23 yards on Wake Forest's first drive of the contest. Over the remainder of the game, Hartman completed all 12 pass attempts for 218 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions. Hartman posted a 284.96 quarterback efficiency rating, the highest-ever by a Wake Forest quarterback with 12 or more pass completions. Hartman's 12 consecutive completions ties a school record shared by John Wolford and Riley Skinner. Hartman's 88.2 completion percentage is the highest-ever for a Deacon QB with 12 or more pass attempts. His 284.96 efficiency rating is the third-best by an FBS quarterback this season.
