ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Wake Forest men's golf team opened play Friday at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate with a strong first round. The No. 11 Demon Deacons are tied for second after 18 holes of an event that features seven of the top 15 teams nationally.
The Demon Deacons shot a 12-under 276 during the first round and are tied with No. 15 Clemson for second. No. 3 Georgia Tech, the tournament's host, is the 18-hole leader at 18-under.
"It was a very nice day here in Atlanta for the Demon Deacons," said head coach Jerry Haas. "Everyone stayed involved and our throw out score was again very good. These players play for hard for this team and we need two more days like today. It will be a little cooler and rainy tomorrow, but will be another great day to compete."
Wake Forest was led on Friday by Eugenio Chacarra, who carded a 6-under 66 to finish the day T-2nd. He is one shot off the individual lead. Kengo Aoshima is also in the top five, carding a 5-under 67 to finish the opening round T-4th.
Eric Bae also shot in red numbers Friday, posting a 2-under 70. Cameron Young and Alex Fitzpatrick rounded out the lineup, each shooting a round of 73.
The Golf Club of Georgia continues Saturday and concludes Sunday in suburban Atlanta.
