ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Wake Forest men's golf team finished in fourth place as it completed against an elite field at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate. The No. 11 Demon Deacons were in contention for the title, leading during the final round, before posting a final score of 16-under.
In an event that featured seven of the top 15 teams in the nation, No. 10 USC took the title at 22-under. No. 15 Clemson was the runner-up at 21-under, followed by No. 3 and host Georgia Tech at 19-under, the Demon Deacons at 16-under and No. 5 Alabama at 15-under.
"The only way to get better down the stretch is to keep getting in the hunt," said head coach Jerry Haas. "I thought we played well, but needed one more score today and just didn't get it. It makes a big difference when you have all five guys counting. I'm very proud of the young guys and the freshmen played great. They hit some really good shots down the stretch, but just had some mental mistakes, which they will learn from. We finished ahead of a lot of good teams this weekend and that will help us in the long run."
Redshirt freshman Kengo Aoshima posted his third straight top-10 finish to open his Wake Forest career, with a collegiate-best fourth place finish. He shot a final round 71 to finish at 8-under. Freshman Eugenio Chacarra had his second career top-10, finishing T-10th at 4-under after a final round 74.
Eric Bae also shot in red numbers on Sunday with a final round 71 to finish the tournament at 2-under. Alex Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young rounded out the lineup with final rounds of 75 and 77, respectively.
The Demon Deacons will conclude the fall portion of their schedule next week with the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational, outside of Mobile, Ala.
