LOXLEY, Ala. – The Wake Forest men's golf team had a strong start to the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational during Saturday's first and second rounds at the Steelwood Country Club. The Demon Deacons are the 36-hole leader at 13-under and will take a nine-shot lead into the final round.
The No. 7 Demon Deacons shot 2-under in the morning first round and 11-under in the afternoon second round. Kennesaw State is the only other team under par after two rounds, in second place at 4-under. Indiana is in third place at even par.
"It was a solid day playing in tricky, windy conditions," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The course held its own in the morning. We made a lot of birdies on the par-5s, playing them 14-under par. We have to go out and play well tomorrow because we will have some good teams chasing us. I feel like our guys are ready to get a victory. Hopefully we can follow the lead that Coach Clawson and the football team set today."
Eric Bae was the low Deac on Saturday, shooting rounds of 71 and 67 to finish the day in second place at 6-under. Cameron Young is T-5th at 2-under after rounds of 72 and 70. Eugenio Chacarra is also in red numbers, T-7th at 1-under par. Kengo Aoshima is at even par through 36 holes, as is Parker Gillam, who is playing as an individual.
The Steelwood Collegiate Invitational, the Deacs' final event of the fall season, concludes Sunday.
