LOXLEY, Ala. – The Wake Forest men's golf team captured its first title of the 2018-19 season with a dominant performance at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational. The Demon Deacons shot 20-under over three rounds at Steelwood Country Club to post a 16-shot victory.
The No. 7 Demon Deacons were led by Eric Bae, who captured his first collegiate individual title. Bae posted rounds of 71-67-69 to finish at 9-under and post a two-shot victory.
Wake Forest shot 7-under during the final round to close out the victory. Mississippi State was the runner-up at 4-under and the only other team to finish the tournament under par. The 16-shot margin of victory was the Demon Deacons' largest since a 28-shot win at the 2015 Yale Spring Invitational.
"It was a very nice week at a wonderful tournament," said head coach Jerry Haas. "South Alabama's program is a class act and this was a first-class event. We played solid all weekend and I felt like we would have a good chance to win if we got a contribution from every guy, which we did. Most of all, I want to congratulate Eric Bae. He has knocked on the door a few times, so it is nice to see him get that first collegiate victory. He is a wonderful kid who works hard every day and deserves this moment."
Bae was joined near the top of the leaderboard by Eugenio Chacarra, who finished third at 4-under after a final round 69. It was the freshman's third top-10 finish in the first five events of his career.
Marco Steyn also shot a final round 69 to tie for low Deac on Sunday. He finished the tournament T-11th at 1-over par. Cameron Young, Kengo Aoshima and Parker Gillam, who was playing as an individual, all finished T-14th at 2-over for the week as Wake Forest had six players in the top 15.
The Demon Deacons finished in the top four in all five tournaments they played this fall. They will open the spring schedule in February at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla.
