CARY, N.C. -- Wake Forest and No. 3 North Carolina were scoreless with less than 20 minutes left, but the Tar Heels scored a late goal to sneak past the Demon Deacons at WakeMed Soccer Park on Thursday night.
The Deacs (8-8-1, 4-6-0 ACC) and Tar Heels (15-2-1, 10-0-0 ACC) were comparable in most statistical categories, with North Carolina holding slight edges in shots (7-5) and corner kicks (3-2).
Madison Schultz scored the game-winner for UNC in the 74th minute, putting away a header inside the 18-yard box off assists from Taylor Otto and Julia Ashley.
Bayley Feist led the Wake Forest offensive attack with two shots, while Mariah Lee and Hannah Betfort each put a shot on target.
Nonie Frishette made three saves to keep the Deacs in the game.
Virginia Tech earned a victory over Louisville to lock up the No. 8 seed in the ACC Championship and eliminate Wake Forest a possible qualification. With a top-30 RPI and three wins over top-20 teams, Wake Forest is still alive in NCAA Tournament contention. The Division I Women's Soccer Selection is Nov. 5 at 4:30 p.m.
