The Demon Deacons locked up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming ACC Championship with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Top-ranked Wake Forest closed out the regular season on a high note, coming from behind to defeat No. 17 Louisville in overtime, 2-1, at Spry Stadium on Friday night.
The Demon Deacons (15-1-0, 7-1-0 ACC) locked up the top overall seed in the upcoming ACC Championship. Wake Forest will host the winner of the No. 8 vs. 9 seeds on Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.; there are two more ACC games tomorrow, and full seeding will be announced following the completion of those games. The opening round will be played on Oct. 31.
Wake Forest finished the regular season a perfect 11-0-0 at Spry Stadium.
"We beat a really good team here tonight," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "We just beat the No. 4 seed in the best soccer conference in the country. Early in the year, nobody was touching them, so it's a really good result."
The Deacs were trailing at halftime for just the second time this season after Izaiah Jennings put the Cardinals (8-4-3, 4-2-2 ACC) on the board in the 37th minute.
After the teams combined for just five shots in the opening half, Wake Forest took control in the second half, holding a 9-0 advantage in shots.
In the 62nd minute, Aristotle Zarris put away his fifth goal of the season, scoring on a one-timer off an Omir Fernandez cross to knot the score at 1-1.
Bruno Lapa netted the golden goal in the 97th minute to win the game for Wake Forest. Zarris led a counter-attack and beat a defender before finding Isaiah Parente in the middle of the field. Parente sent Justin McMaster down along the right sideline, and McMaster sent a cross into the box where Lapa was there for the one-timer finish, his 10th goal of the season.
Wake Forest had a 14-3 advantage in shots and 8-1 margin in corner kicks to control the flow of the game.
The Deacs honored the program's four seniors before the game: Tre Bailey, Brad Dunwell, Logan Gdula and Sam Raben.
"It's a pretty incredible thing - that's their 71st win," Muuss added. "You've got to pinch yourself to realize that doesn't happen in this conference or in the country very often."
