Wake Forest clinched a spot in the ACC Championship Semifinal with a 2-0 victory, as Andreu Cases Mundet earned his fifth shutout.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 1 Wake Forest clinched a trip in the ACC Championship Semifinals for the fourth-straight season with a 2-0 shutout victory over eighth-seeded NC State at Spry Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Demon Deacons (17-1-0) will take on fourth-seeded and No. 15-ranked Louisville for the second time in three games, hosting the Cardinals at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The Cardinals defeated fifth-seeded Notre Dame, 1-0, in their Quarterfinal matchup. Wake Forest beat Louisville in overtime in the regular season finale on Oct. 26.
"I don't think it was our cleanest performance for 90 minutes," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "I give NC State a lot of credit, I thought they did a good job with the ball for long periods of time. They made it interesting, especially towards the end of the game. We conceded a lot of half-chances, I would say, but we needed to put that game away earlier in the second half. I thought we had plenty of opportunities."
Wake Forest received a pair of early goals from Omir Fernandez and Machop Chol in the 13th and 20th minutes, respectively, to jump in front of the Wolfpack (9-6-3). Andreu Cases Mundet matched his season-high with five saves between the posts to preserve his fifth shutout of the season.
At the 12:37 mark, Chol beat a defender along the right side and sent in a cross to Fernandez for the one-timer finish. Fernandez took the team lead with his 11th goal of the season, and his third against NC State as he recorded a brace in the Sept. 7 victory.
Chol found of the back of net less than seven minutes later at the 19:10 mark. Bruno Lapa took a free kick from 20 yards and found Joey DeZart past the far post. DeZart sent a header to the edge of the 6-yard box, where Chol was waiting for the one-timer past NC State keeper Leon Krapf to double the Deacon lead.
Wake Forest had advantages in shots (14-11) and corners (8-4) en route to the victory.
"To get clean sheets in the postseason is great," Muuss added after improving to 7-1-1 in the ACC Championship at Wake Forest. "To get a third goal would have been better because it would have taken the pressure off the game. I'm extremely proud of the guys, we won a game in the ACC Tournament which is extremely hard to do."
On the other side of the bracket, North Carolina defeated Virginia Tech and Duke edged Pitt in penalties. The winner of Wake Forest-Louisville will play the winner of North Carolina-Duke at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary on Nov. 11 at noon on ESPNU.
