The Cardinals scored in the 98th minute to defeat the Deacs, 2-1, and earn a berth in the ACC Championship game.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- No. 1 Wake Forest bounced back from a halftime deficit, but No. 10 Louisville scored the golden goal in the 98th minute to win in overtime, 2-1, and eliminate Wake Forest from ACC Championship contention.
The fourth-seeded Cardinals (10-4-3) advance to the ACC Championship game, where they will play No. 2 seed North Carolina on Sunday.
Joey DeZart scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the 52nd minute for a Demon Deacon (17-2-0) equalizer. Logan Gdula sent in a slip pass and after two touches, DeZart sent a far-post, left-footed shot past the keeper.
Haji Abdikadir previously scored his first-career goal for Louisville in the 44th minute. He was open in the middle of the pitch and blasted a shot into the upper corner from 35 yards out to put the Cardinals ahead.
At the 97:58 mark, a failed Wake Forest clearance bounced to the Cardinals. Tate Schmitt passed it to Elijah Amo on the right side of the box, and Amo's low shot deflected off a Wake Forest defender into the air and over the head of Andreu Cases Mundet's head, just past the goal line for the game-winner.
The Deacs had several chances they were unable to convert. Immediately following DeZart's goal, Omir Fernandez sent a strike from 30 yards just over the keeper's head, but it ricocheted off the crossbar and out of play. In the closing seconds of the second half, Fernandez again got free from the defense and unleashed a shot, this one missing just wide of the post.
"This is a big tournament for us," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "This is the hardest trophy in college soccer to win because it's the best conference in the country. You could look at it as three extra days of rest but we would have had extra rest anyway. How we deal with adversity and how we get better in the next 10 days is the most important thing to try to put our best foot forward and try to beat whoever we get in the NCAA Tournament."
Wake Forest will await its NCAA Tournament path on Monday, as the Selection Show will air at 1 p.m. on NCAA.com.
"A lot of times at Wake Forest we take these things for granted because there's an expectation and a history of winning, but the work these guys do in front and behind the scenes is incredible to put themselves in this situation," Muuss added. "Hopefully there's a lot of football left in us and we can go on a long run here in the next few weeks."
