No. 1 Wake Forest Tops Colgate in NCAA Second Round

11/18/2018 8:18:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Omir Fernandez and Justin McMaster both scored in the Deacons' 2-0 victory.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Top-seeded and second-ranked Wake Forest defeated Colgate by a 2-0 margin in the second round of the NCAA Championship on Sunday night at Spry Stadium.

Omir Fernandez and Justin McMaster both found the back of the net to lead the Demon Deacons (18-2-0) into the round of 16 for the fourth-straight season.

"Big sigh of relief," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "After being off for 10 days, this first game is always a difficult one in the tournament...I was extremely excited about the first half and the way we played. A shutout win in the NCAA Tournament you see some of the other results, all these games are tight. To get that second goal was huge for us and obviously that took a little pressure off. Hats off to the guys."

Wake Forest will host No. 16-ranked Akron on Sunday at 5 p.m. with a trip to the quarterfinals on the line.

In the 15th minute, Machop Chol beat a defender along the end line and send in a cross to the box, where Fernandez redirected it past the keeper with a one-timer for what proved to be the game-winner, his 12th goal of the season.

Wake Forest added a late insurance goal from McMaster in the 80th minute. Isaiah Parente found McMaster alone just outside the box, and McMaster finished to the upper-90.

The Raiders (13-5-5) increased the pressure in the second half and were even in shots at 5-5 in the second period. The Deacs had an 11-6 advantage overall, as well as a 4-0 margin in corners.

Andreu Cases Mundet made two saves in goal as he recorded his sixth shutout of the season.

Wake Forest improved to 4-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament under Muuss, all four wins coming via shutouts.

The Deacs last played Akron in 2015, a back-and-forth game in which both teams were ranked in the top 10 and Wake Forest came out on top, 2-1. The game featured 32 shots, 39 fouls, 14 saves and seven corner kicks.

"Akron has been to two of the last three College Cups. It's going to be a great college soccer match," Muuss added. "For a college soccer fan and for a soccer purist, these are two teams that like to play. We played them my first season and it was one of the best games I've been involved in since I've been here."
