Deacs Drop Myrtle Beach Opener to Saint Joseph's

CONWAY, S.C. – Wake Forest dropped its opening game at the Myrtle Beach Invitational, falling to Saint Joseph's 89-69 in the first quarterfinal Thursday at the HTC Center. The Demon Deacons (1-1) will continue play in the event Friday morning with a consolation matchup with Cal State Fullerton. The Hawks (3-0) advanced to meet UCF in Friday's semifinals.
Freshmen Jaylen Hoard and Isaiah Mucius each scored 14 points to lead the Demon Deacons. Brandon Childress added 13 points for Wake Forest. Charlie Brown, Jr. had 26 points and Taylor Funk scored 20 points to lead Saint Joseph's.
The first half was fast-paced and high-scoring, with both teams shooting well behind the arc. The Hawks were 9-15 from deep and the Deacs were 8-15 from three over the opening 20 minutes as the teams headed to the lockerroom tied at 46-46. Hoard and Mucius each had 11 first-half points to lead Wake Forest.
The Hawks opened the second half strong, going on a 9-0 run to start the period to seize control of the game. Saint Joseph's later used a 13-0 run later in the half to put the game out of reach.
Saint Joseph's finished the game shooting 16-of-30 from deep, tying the Wake Forest school record for most three-pointers allowed.
