Wake Forest rebounded from an opening-set loss with three straight wins over the Tigers
CLEMSON, S.C. – Behind a stingy defense, the Wake Forest volleyball team rebounded from a first-set lost to defeat Clemson, 3-1, Friday (Nov. 16) evening on the road.
After allowing the Tigers (15-14, 6-10 ACC) to hit at a .467 clip in the opening set, the Demon Deacons (10-19, 5-12 ACC) cranked up the defensive pressure. Over the final three sets, Wake Forest limited Clemson to just a .020 hitting percentage en route to the victory.
Paige Sebesta recorded a double-double, finishing with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Caitlyn Della added a team-high 13 kills on a .478 hitting percentage. Madeline Holt dished out 38 assists while the duo of Hailey Brooke McFadden and Bronte Zlomek contributed a combined 21 digs.
After Clemson stormed out of the gates with a quick 25-12 win in the opening set, the Deacs responded with a similarly dominating 25-13 victory in the second set to even the match at 1-all. It was an impressive offensive performance for the Deacs, recording 14 kills while committing no hitting errors in the set.
It was a closely contested third set early, until a 9-1 Wake Forest run put the Deacs ahead for good at 13-5. The Tigers tried to close the deficit, but back-to-back kills by Olivia Saunders and Caroline Rassenfoss sealed the set for the visitors. Wake Forest's defense limited Clemson to a negative hitting percentage, as the Tigers hit at a -.065 clip in the third set.
The Deacs found themselves in an early 6-3 hole in the fourth, but a 10-3 run pushed Wake Forest in front, 13-9. Saunders and Rassenfoss helped kick-start the run, teaming up for blocks on consecutive plays. Clemson would get no closer than four points of Wake Forest, as the Deacs closed out the 25-19 set win to claim the match.
Wake Forest closes out its season on Sunday, Nov. 24, on the road at Syracuse. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
