Deacs Fall at VCU in Road Opener

11/18/2018 8:21:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Gina Conti and Ivana Raca scored in double figures as Wake Forest suffers its first defeat of the season

RICHMOND, Va. – Competing on the road for the first time this season, the Wake Forest women's basketball team fell short for the first time, dropping a 53-40 decision to VCU Sunday (Nov. 18) evening at E.J. Wade Arena.

After taking a 13-point lead into halftime, Wake Forest (3-1) was outscored 38-12 in the second half by VCU (3-1) en route to its first loss of the season.

Ona Udoh nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Gina Conti scored a team-high 11 points while Ivana Raca added 10 points of her own, her fourth consecutive game in double figures to open the season.

The Deacs stormed out of the gate, opening the game on a 6-0 run which prompted a VCU timeout three minutes into the game. Udoh scored in the paint on Wake Forest's opening possession before Conti and Raca each got shots to fall. Wake Forest's defense stymied the Rams over the opening 10 minutes, limiting VCU to just 21.4 percent shooting.

Wake Forest's lead ballooned to double digits midway through the second quarter after Christina Morra hit a pair of back-to-back jumpers, pushing the advantage to 22-10 and forcing a Ram timeout. As a team, the Deacs shot an impressive 44.0 percent from the field during the first half to take a 28-15 lead into the halftime break.

It was all VCU coming out of the locker room, scoring the first 14 points of the quarter to pull ahead for the first time Sunday, 29-28. Maya Banks ended VCU's run with a layup with 2:35 remaining in the period, but the Rams would take a one-point lead into the final quarter after outscoring Wake Forest 18-4 in the third. VCU would maintain its momentum over the final 10 minutes, outscoring Wake Forest 20-8 to pull away with the victory.

Wake Forest returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at home against Xavier. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the LJVM Coliseum.
