Penn State scored the lone goal of the match in the 14th minute to capture the victory.
MORGANTOWN, W. Va.- The Wake Forest women's soccer season came to an end as the Deacons suffered a 1-0 loss to No. 14 Penn State on Sunday in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
The lone goal of the contest was scored early as Penn State got on the board in the 14th minute. Marissa Sheva found her way past Wake Forest keeper Nonie Frishette with the assist from Ellie Jean, but the defenses were on display for the remainder of the game, as no other shots could find the back of the net.
Wake Forest stayed on the heels of Penn State putting up just one less shot in the first half. The Nittany Lions took a 6-5 shot advantage and a 3-1 shot on goal advantage into the locker room with a 1-0 lead. Hulda Arnardottir recorded the lone shot on target for the Deacons in the opening half of play.
"We have to credit Penn State. They pressed us and gave us very few openings," head coach Tony da Luz said. "I thought our kids fought back into the game and created some chances. I'm proud of our kids after playing overtime and penalties on Friday night, they gave an unbelievable effort today to try and get that goal and tie the game."
Bayley Feist led the offensive effort with two shots, while Vicky Krug and Mariah Lee each put a shot on goal in the second half. Frishette made three saves in the net.
The offensive attack remained even in the second frame as both teams finished the game with eight shots. However, the Nittany Lions posted one more shot on target and maintained a 6-3 corner advantage for the match. Wake Forest did not receive a corner opportunity in the first half, but had three corners in the second frame. Penn State was awarded five corners in the opening half, but was held to just one in the second period.
Wake Forest finishes the season with a 9-9-2 overall record. The Deacons made their 20th overall appearance and second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2018.
